Our senior rugby team progressed in the O Brien cup on Wednesday beating Waterpark college by 20 points to 10. The match played in Clonmel saw Cathal Broderick, Keith Murphy and Man of the match Chris Leahy all score tries. Cormac Roche had a conversion and Dan G Hartnett a penalty.

This year has been a very successful first year for Gaelic Football in the School. Trainer Tom Cahill reflects back:

“It was an honour to be asked to do this important job. I have to thank the local club who had given me opportunities to train in the past. With Fr. Casey’s I have had two under 21 teams, trained the ladies intermediate team, county minor winning team and was involved with the Tarbert senior team that made the North Kerry Final.

When I arrived last September the first task was to try and identify players for the various age groups. I did this during the P.E class and the numerous training sessions after school. I had to come and get to know the new staff so that we could work effectively as a team. I co-operated with Jack Brislane initially on this and then got to know the individual teachers who would be taking football teams during the year: Diarmaid O’Connell, Shane Curtin, Sean Kennedy and David Kennelly. We discussed team lists and training schedules.

I most also say a great thank you to the North Kerry and West Limerick clubs for their contributions to the training of teams outside of school hours.

Looking back at the various teams and how they did:

With the senior team, we had a very strong panel (including several Kerry and Limerick minors). Their management team of Diarmaid O’Connell and Sean Kennedy worked closely with me in honing this into a team that got to a County Final where we convincingly beat St Munchins 1-15 to 0-6. After this we focussed on our Munster campaign but here despite a hard fought final we were narrowly defeated in extra time by Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk

At under 16 level I was helped in getting this team together by Shane Curtin and David Kennelly. We had a difficult path to the county final with a very close semi final against Hazelwood before we had a convincing win over Castletroy College in the County Final. In Munster following the defeat of Killenaule we were beaten by Cahir in the quarter final stage.

The year ended with the first years taking on Castleisland in a Munster final played in very good conditions in Knocknagoshel. In one of the most exciting games I have ever seen at underage level we emerged the victors by a solitary point.

I want to say a very special thank you to all the members of staff in Colaiste Ide agus Iosef and also to those who helped me out during the year with the task of fielding so many quality teams.

I must also make special mention to the players that made the effort on so many occasions after school for some very tough training sessions.

In the coming year there will be many exciting challenges ahead none more so then the involvement of some of our students in a new Corn na Mhuiri team. Something to look forward to for after the holidays!"
