Historic first Camogie win for Abbeyfeale

A historic first Munster title for an Abbeyfeale team in Camogie was achieved last Sunday in Tournafulla, when Colaiste Ide agus Iosef convincingly saw off the challenge of Salesians, Pallaskenry to win the Munster Intermediate crown. A large crowd witnessed a convincing early performance by Colaiste Ide agus Iosef, which led to a 10 point lead at half time. Despite a flurry of goals in the second half this margin was never eroded and the Colaiste Ide agus Iosef ran out eventual winners on a scoreline of 7-10 to 3-3.

The historic journey to this title began back in mid-October when Colaiste Ide agus Iosaf took on GaelCholáiste Luimnigh in the first round of the Munster championship. Teachers Rebecca Delee and Marie Lenihan had worked hard with a panel of 23 players and it showed as despite an early setback the  team dug deep and advanced to the Munster quarter final on a score line of 4-12 to 2-2. Colaiste Ide agus Iosaf played Scoil Pól Kilfinane in that quarter final in extremely bad weather conditions, but despite the rain, frost and even snow the girls fought hard for every ball, showed great team spirit and were victorious on a score line of 1-6 to 1-1. North Presentation School were Colaiste Ide agus Iosaf’s opponents in the Munster Semi final, played in extremely frosty conditions. The result was 3-9 to 4 points in favour of Colaiste Ide agus Iosaf and although the result may not suggest it, this was the girl’s toughest match of the campaign.

Thoughout this championship, the girls showed great determination, heart and skilful passages of play. There were fantastic scenes of joy on Sunday when Mike Nash presented captain, Shannyn Foley with the Hayes Intermediate Camogie Cup. Thanks to Tournafulla Development Association and Tournafulla Community Alert for the preparation of food and hospitality after the match.

Panel: Elise Buckley, Rachel Doody, Shannyn Foley (c), Roisin Scanlon, Ellen Scanlon, Ellie Lane, Michelle Curtin, Larissa McCarthy, Stephanie Woulfe, Noelle Curtin, Aoife Curtin, Sarah O’ Brien, Noreen Nolan, Muirne Lane, Siobhan Sheehy, Caoimhe Hickey, Shona Hickey, Ciara Ward, Amy Brouder, Lily Doody, Roisin Egan, Lauren O’Connor, Lisa Nolan
