Junk Kouture finalists

Transition Year students from Colaiste Ide agus Iosef were delighted to find out last Thursday that two of their entries in the Junk Kouture national competition had made it through to the Southern Regional Finals. This is the first year that the community college on the Kerry Limerick border has entered the competition. The two creations have strong messages, with one taking the theme of Gay Pride and the other nature and caring for the environment. The regional finals will take place in University Concert Hall Limerick on March 9th

One of the two successful outfits, "Androgynous" by twins Shona and Caoimhe Hickey had as its theme Gay Pride. Using crisp bags their colourful creation co-ordinates with the rainbow flag. Words like 'Pride', 'Equality' and 'Love' are attached to the pants using crisp bags. The outfit with its futuristic look has a message for where society should go.
"Lady in Leaves" by Grainne Flynn, Caoimhe Pegley and Shauna O Shea is a design that helps to personify the beauty of nature. The students embraced using natural and organic materials including evergreen and deciduous leaves along with off cuts of chicken wire, bed sheets and old fabric. They believe their couture will draw peoples attention to the pressing threats facing the environment. The creation encapsulates the rebirth of organic materials restoring them to their former glory.
The students will now attend the Regional finals in Limerick, with their teacher Keith O Rahilly on March 9th. On that night they will get to display their outfits on the catwalk to a piece of music that they have chosen.
UPDATE *** Until Friday 23rd February you can vote for one of the two designs. This will count towards 10% of overall vote in Regional Final. You can vote often (every day) so head over here to register and vote. Thanks !!
